چکیده

Abstract The phase response curve (PRC) is an important measure representing the interaction between oscillatory elements. To understand synchrony in biological systems, many research groups have sought to measure PRCs directly from biological cells including neurons. Ermentrout et al. and Ota et al. showed that PRCs can be identified through measurement of white-noise spike-triggered averages (wSTAs). The disadvantage of this method is that one has to collect more than tenthousand spikes to ensure the accuracy of the estimate. In this paper, to achieve a more accurate estimation of PRCs with a limited sample size, we use colored noise, which has recently drawn attention because of its unique effect on dynamical systems. We numerically show that there is an optimal colored noise to estimate PRCs in the most rigorous fashion.

Efficient generation of correlated random numbers using Chebyshev-optimal magnitude-only IIR filters

We compare several methods for the efficient generation of correlated random sequences (colored noise) by filtering white noise to achieve a desired correlation spectrum. We argue that a class of IIR filter-design techniques developed in the 1970s, which obtain the global Chebyshev-optimum minimum-phase filter with a desired magnitude and arbitrary phase, are uniquely suited for this problem bu...

Impact of neuronal heterogeneity on correlated colored noise-induced synchronization

Synchronization plays an important role in neural signal processing and transmission. Many hypotheses have been proposed to explain the origin of neural synchronization. In recent years, correlated noise-induced synchronization has received support from many theoretical and experimental studies. However, many of these prior studies have assumed that neurons have identical biophysical properties...

Optimal phase response curves for stochastic synchronization of limit-cycle oscillators by common Poisson noise.

We consider optimization of phase response curves for stochastic synchronization of noninteracting limit-cycle oscillators by common Poisson impulsive signals. The optimal functional shape for sufficiently weak signals is sinusoidal, but can differ for stronger signals. By solving the Euler-Lagrange equation associated with the minimization of the Lyapunov exponent characterizing synchronizatio...

An Iterative Parameters Estimation Method for Hyperbolic Frequency Modulated Signals with Colored Noise Shuai

This paper presents an iterative method for estimating the starting frequency and period slope of hyperbolic frequency modulated (HFM) signals with underwater acoustic platform colored noise. The method involves, firstly, whitening of the colored noise and, secondly, instantaneous frequency (IF) estimation of HFM signals based on the peak of short-time Fourier transform (STFT) and taking recipr...

Optimal Tracking Performance of Control Systems with Two-Channel Constraints

This paper focuses on the tracking performance limitation for a class of networked control systems(NCSs) with two-channel constraints. In communication channels, we consider bandwidth, energy constraints and additive colored Gaussian noise(ACGN) simultaneously. In plant, non-minimal zeros and unstable poles are considered; multi-repeated zeros and poles are also applicable. To obtain the optima...
